During a recent SFHS NJROTC Orientation trip to California, the cadets were eating dinner at Golden Corral when they left their seats and went to sit with an elderly woman. They saw she was carrying a bowl of ice cream and an ice cream cone to her table, and noticed that when she sat down there was only one drink. She was sitting by herself. She placed the bowl of ice cream across from her and then started eating her cone. One cadet grabbed a couple of other cadets and went to sit with her. When it was time to go, Chief Shipp walked to the table and met the woman, whose name was Danette, to let them know about the departure. Danette said “Hello, are you the mom of all of these kids?” The cadets and the Chief laughed, but she could tell that they had been talking about a range of subjects from the serious to lighthearted. The Chief watched as the cadets helped her up from her chair and one by one, all gave her a hug then grabbed some photos to commemorate their time with Danette. The cadets proceeded to walk with Danette to her car and get her settled (she wanted to get home before dark). While talking with Danette, the cadets found out her husband was a WWII veteran who had just passed away a month ago - the ice cream bowl was for him. The fact that our cadets took notice of what was happening around them then acted on it unprompted with nothing but respect, honor, and kindness is a testimony to the caliber of SFHS cadets that the Chief and Commander are creating in our NJROTC. Great job Cadets, we are proud of you!

Due to snow and icy road conditions across the District that would prohibit the safe transportation of students to school, all schools will be closed. This is not a remote learning day. All after school and evening activities are canceled.
